Consumer crisis resources
In the event of a personal or physical disaster involving your family, home, or community, several resources are available to you:
- To report a disaster in your area, contact your local police or fire department, or your local town hall or governing authority.
- If you are in need of food and/or shelter due to a disaster, contact your local chapter of the Red Cross.
- If the area you live in is part of a state-declared disaster area, contact your State Office of Emergency Management.
- If the area you live in is part of a federally declared disaster area, contact the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Online Resources for Disaster Response for Financial Matters
- After Disaster Strikes, a brochure written, developed, and printed by NEFE for the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and distributed through Red Cross chapters nationwide. The brochure covers essential steps an individual or family may need to take in the recovery phase following a natural disaster.
- Coping with Death and Injury: Financial Considerations in a Time of Need, a brochure from the FPA describing the types and timing of decisions to be made after a tragedy.
